Should Photographers Give Raw Images To Clients For Free ?

Raw image from a photoshoot for Maison-Britt

That’s something I struggled with for a long time because when I started photography and learned about the business, it was one of the things I read that photographers must not do. I don’t mind sometimes giving raw images. It depends on whom. I give raw images of the photos that the client didn’t selected for retouching. For example, I am happy to send the raw photos to small brands. Some raw images don’t even need to be retouched and can be used like they are. Here is an example of a raw image that my client use on her social media. It looks fresh and clean, so no need for retouching there.

Most photographers, including myself, typically set rates for both the photography session and post-production work. While some photographers choose to charge extra for raw images, I personally don’t (although maybe I should consider it). This is a common practice in the industry, but it can be a point of contention among clients.

Sending the non-edited images and charging for that seems to me like adding taxes. You know when the government adds taxes just to find a reason for us to pay more…

Providing raw images of the pictures that the client didn’t selected for retouching can be seen as a generous gesture that fosters trust and transparency. Ultimately, I think the decision to provide raw images for free depends on the photographer and client’s expectations. There doesn’t seem to be a specific rule about it. It’s important to weigh the benefits and potential drawbacks before making a decision that works best for everyone.

If you read this and you are a photographer, I would be glad to hear how you proceed with your clients !
